Officially named as IPv6 - Internet Protocol Version 6 was invented in 1994(Still called next generation!!!). Previous version of IP is v4 (IPv4). Primary change from IPv6 to IPv4 is IPv6 addresses are 128 bits long while IPv4's is 32 bits. This over comes the main draw back of IPv4 : limited number of available IP addresses. IPv4 provides around 4 Billion (2^32) addresses where as IPV6 enables, 2^128 IP addresses.
For more information regarding IPv6 visit : http://www.ipv6.org/
